Toyota Muppets Terry Crews Super Bowl Commercial
|
The Muppets and Terry Crews (Are We There Yet) have a Toyota Highlander 2014 Super Bowl commercial called "Joyride." In the commercial, Terry Crews pulls his car over because he sees a stranded, smoking, colorful bus. As you can guess, the Muppets end up getting in the car and the commercial follows their zany story as they try "Unborifying" Terry Crews. They want him to have some fun and loosen up.

What are the Muppets Promoting?
The Muppets are promoting their upcoming movie, Muppets Most Wanted, which comes out on March 21, 2014 (the same date as the highly anticipated Divergent movie). The movie is about the Muppets on their European tour. While they are overseas, Kermit is mistaken for the world's worst criminal who looks just like him.
The Muppets will be Tweeting during the Super Bowl game, you can write to them at @Toyota by using the hash tag #NoRoomForBoring. |

The Muppets are Stranded on the Side of the Road
The commercial starts out with Terry Crews sighing as he drives his Toyota Highlander through the desert listening to a light tune. He sees a purple smoking bus and pulls over to see what's going on.
"Anybody need help?" Terry asks.
The door flies open and a Muppet starts getting in. "Mighty nice of you, padre!" the Muppet says. Terry does a double take as he's shocked that it may not be safe to pick up strangers on the side of the road.
"Sweet Highlander!" another says
"Drums! Drums!" Animal shouts as he tosses his drums in.
Terry Crews jumps out of the car saying, "No, no, no!" He is too stuffy for all of that nonsense. The Muppets climb in and make themselves at home and he jumps in as they all drive off.
Light elevator music plays in the background. "Can someone change the station?" one of the Muppets ask. "Music terrible!" another agrees.
Finally a Muppet pleads, "Dios mio! This music is melting my brain away!" At least that's what I think he's saying. What a great time for a song!

What Song are the Muppets Singing in the Commercial?
The song in the Muppets Honda ad is very catchy! I am having trouble figuring out some of the lyrics, but here is what I hear in the song in the commercial:
"We got a whole flock of chickens and a grand piano,
ooh a (tell me what this part says in comments below!) too!
And there's a whole bunch of women playing Bingo in the gym,
We can show 'em all a thing or two!
But we ain't go no room for boring! (<- I thought they said "worry" at first)
My (what?) is just too much space to consume!
No we ain't got no room for boring,
For boring we ain't got no room!"
During the whole song, we've got the Muppets traveling all over the place (not sure why Terry was in the desert in the first place, but hopefully they're taking him where he needs to go). The Muppets somehow find enough electricity in the Highlander to plug in their electric guitars and keyboard (or is it a grand piano?) and rock out.
Just in case you were curious, there is enough room in the center console to keep your chickens. (Does that guy sing that there's a drunkard and an organ too?) At this point we see Gonzo lightly bobbing his head. He's wearing a dress shirt and tie. I'd say he's as "boring" as pre-Muppet Terry in this commercial.
I'm really glad that in the next scene no old ladies were standing near the door in the Bingo hall. The Muppets are really lazy and can't carry their music equipment from the car outside, so they just decide to drive on in. The old people don't mind though, they decide to dance with Crews and the chickens instead of playing Bingo. That's way more fun.
Terry Crews is now bobbing his head in the car and loosening up the tie a bit. The Muppets decide that they need a booze break and go stomp some grapes in a vineyard. The only girl Muppet sings some line about her guess, but her mouth is full of grapes so I have no idea what it is. Random Muppets that must have been hiding in the car (like Beaker) join in and the puppets must steal clothing from the farm they're on because I didn't see any luggage before and Ralph the dog is now wearing a cowboy hat.
The grand finale of the trip has the Muppets in the middle of a parade in Miami. Terry Crews now is wearing his shirt as a cape and all the women watching are happy to see his abs as he dances. And, boy, is he a good dancer.

Terry Crews Dancing Shirtless in the Sunroof
As the song ends in the commercial, we're taken back to what we can assume is Terry's home. Kermit asks Terry Crews, "Are you doing alright there, fella?" because he is in his Highlander with his shirt-cape and tie headband with his hands in the air singing by himself.
"There were singing vegetables! And chickens!" Crews responds.
"Yeah," Kermit casually says as he waters his plants. "Happens to me all the time." Terry continues dancing in the sunroof of his Toyota like a crazy man.

Why This Commercial is Effective
The main thing that will make this commercial effective is that the song in it is one that can get stuck in your head for days (trust me, I watched this commercial several times already and I'm singing along at this point even when it's not actually playing). Toyota also did a great job of selecting Terry Crews - a football player that does great physical humor. If this one doesn't make you laugh, it will at least make you smile!
What Toyota Could Have Done Better
The problem with a lot of commercials today is that people will watch them and not have any idea what specific product it was for. In this commercial, they'll remember it was an SUV, and they'll remember the Muppets and Crews, but the brief mention "Sweet Highlander" is not going to get people drooling over this car. Luckily, the familiar Toyota jingle and Animal saying, "Let's Go Places" at least gets their slogan across. My guess is that most people after watching this a few times wouldn't specifically place it with the "Highlander."
Toyota Highlander Selling Points
The Toyota Highlander has enough room for eight people and this is one of the key concepts that they are promoting in their 2014 Super Bowl commercial. The Vice President of Toyota Marketing, Jack Hollis, said, "Toyota vehicles are built to last and can even endure the most boisterous Muppets, a former NFL player as well as a center console full of chickens."
What do the Muppets have to do with the Highlander? Don Gross, The Walt Disney Studios vice president of promotions said, "The Muppets' classic mix of high energy and heart matches perfectly with Toyota's spirit of adventure, and Kermit, Gonzo and the whole gang look forward to many zany road trips." As you'll see, Animal even has enough room to fit his drum set in the back of the Toyota Highlander. He isn't allowed to drive though, because he "doesn't get the whole concept of brakes," according to Kermit.
